Reunion History

The Barnes Family Reunion started in 1981 at Potawatomi Park Zoo in South Bend, Indiana and was founded by Joseph Gause, the oldest son of Rosa Lee (Barnes) Outlaw.  He started the reunion with the instructions of his mother “to keep the family together.”The Reunion continued as the Barnes Family Reunion until 2006.

In order to include descendants of the union of Martha Nelson and Daley Parker, which was Martha Nelson’s first husband in 2006 the first Martha Nelson Parker Barnes Union was held in Louisville, Kentucky at the home of Tamara Tarver, the youngest daughter of Anna Lou Taylor who was the oldest daughter of Martha Nelson Parker Barnes.

We have found other family members of Martha Nelson’s siblings. Descendants of Lollie Nelson, Martha Nelson's sister (Beard Family).  The Beard Family attends yearly and we continue to grow. The reunion was changed again in 2012 in Louisville, Kentucky to the Nelson Family Reunion to reflect the entirety of our family.
